The Department of Languages and Culture Studies (LCS) at UNC Charlotte greatly appreciates your visit to our Web site for the Master of Arts in Spanish. Our M.A. in Spanish offers two tracks which build on a common core of courses (12 hours) in Spanish and Spanish American literature, Spanish or Spanish American civilization and culture, and Spanish linguistics. The two tracks, each consisting of 18-24 hours of graduate course work, are Language, Literature and Culture (LLC) and Translating and Translation Studies (TTS) . Our M.A. in Spanish, implemented in 2001, builds on a very successful undergraduate program that has well over 150 majors and more than 100 minors in Spanish, and on our successful undergraduate Certificate in Translating (CT) which UNC Charlotte has offered since 1979, and the successful Certificate in Business Spanish (CBS) created in 1998. To date we have graduated 20 M.A. students. Students in the program include North Carolina residents as well as those who have come from other states and countries. During the academic year, we average 40-50 graduate students who are enrolled in the M.A. program. The UNC Charlotte M.A. in Spanish is designed to provide a rich variety of graduate course work in a major world language which is also becoming increasingly important in the United States . Staffed by faculty with national and international reputations, the program serves individuals who seek a greater understanding of Spanish language, literatures and cultures, and who seek career and professional advancement opportunities in education, translation, applied language (Spanish for business and international trade), and who contemplate pursuing a Ph.D. in fields such as Hispanic literature, linguistics, translating and translation studies, intercultural communication, or international studies.
