The overall goal of the Department of Languages and Culture Studies (LACS) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is to develop and enrich language skills, critical thinking, and cultural understanding, so that we can better understand and communicate with the diverse and complex world around us. The LACS Faculty and Staff have designed its programs to develop communicative abilities in languages other than English and to provide insights into foreign cultures through the study of language, culture, and literature. The Department offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Spanish, a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in French, German and Spanish, the undergraduate Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree with majors in French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, and minors in French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and a minor in Classical Studies (including Ancient Greek, Latin and Modern Greek). Arabic, Chinese, Italian, and Portuguese are offered regularly through the intermediate level of instruction. Farsi, Swahili, and other languages are offered on demand.

Program Requirements
The B.A. degree in French, German, Japanese, or Spanish is a relatively structured program, beginning with language classes at the beginning and intermediate levels and culminating in more advanced classes in literature and culture as well as continued study of the language itself. Both French and Spanish offer two variations or tracks for completing the major. Spanish offers an Honors Program and a Senior Seminar. All four majors encourage students to master the language through study abroad opportunities. Students with little or no background in the language should declare the major as Freshmen in order to graduate on time; students who do not need to take beginning or intermediate language classes may declare as late as their junior year and still complete the degree on schedule. Students interested in pursuing teacher licensure, study abroad or Spanish Honors, should contact the Department as early as possible. Students interested in foreign language study are encouraged to explore the options of a single major in French, German, Japanese, or Spanish; a double major in a foreign language and another discipline or in two languages; a foreign language minor; a concentration in one or more languages to complement a major in another academic area; or a concentration of courses leading to a Certificate in Translating or a Certificate in Business Language.
