The department offers scholarships up to $1000 a year which are named after professors in whose name money was donated to the German Scholarship endowment. The endowment was set up in 1993 and gave its first award in 1994, the Susan Cernyak-Spatz Scholarship. The Karl Gabriel Scholarship followed in 1995 and the Robert C. Reimer scholarship in 1997.

The Susan Cernyak-Spatz scholarship is named for Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz, associate professor of German emerita, who was a member of the Department of Foreign Languages from 1972-1993. It is awarded to students of high academic potential in German Studies. Dr. Cernyak-Spatz taught courses in the Holocaust, German language and literature, and organized German theater performances with intermediate and advanced students. Her drama teams regularly won awards at the Clemson Dionysus foreign language students drama festival, performaing scenes from Brecht, Frisch and Duerrenmatt, among others.

The Karl M. Gabriel Scholarship is named for Dr. Karl Gabriel, professor emeritus, and a member of the Department of Foreign Languages from 1965 until 1994 and its chair from 1971 until 1980. It has been awarded annually since 1995 to a student of high academic potential in German studies, who has shown interest in our program through involvement in German activities. Dr. Gabriel introduced the German major at UNC Charlotte and taught courses in language and literature, including German fairy tales and folk literature. He also served as president of the NCAATG in the seventies.

The Robert C. Reimer Scholarship was made possible by a contribution from David Alkire, a UNC Charlotte graduate in German. It is named for Dr. Robert Reimer, professor of German since 1971, and is awarded to a student of high potential in German studies or related areas.. He served as interim chair of the department 1992-94 and as director of the minor in film studies since 2201. Dr. Reimer teaches courses in language and literature, and also in German Film. He also served as German Club advisor 1971-2005.

The Charles S. Merrill Scholarship is named for Dr. Charles Merrill, associate professor emeritus and member of the department of foreign languages from 1969-2003. It is awarded to a student of high potential in German literature and philosophy or international business, concentration German. Dr. Merrill taught courses in language and literature, including German philosophy. He originated the certificate in German Business and served as the program's director until 2003. (awarded since 2003).

The William M. Park Scholarship is named for Dr. William Park, associate professor emeritus, and member of the department from 1972-2002. Dr. Park directed the language lab for two decades and then developed UNC Charlotte's successful Certificate in Translation Program. The award is given to students who show high potential in German studies with emphasis in translation. (not yet awarded).

All five of the proferssors named here were present as the German major was set up and grew into a small, but successful program. They were also all charter members of the city's Alemannia German Club.

There are two types of scholarships available for Spanish Majors and Minors:

The La Noticia Scholarship
The La Noticia Scholarship is granted by the local Spanish language newspaper of the same name to honor Spanish major or minor students that participate in service learning opportunities or other kinds of service and volunteer programs within the Hispanic Communities in the Charlotte metro region.  The scholarship seeks to stimulate and encourage community involvement among UNCC students.  To be eligible you must meet all of the following requirements:
• 3.0 GPA
• Undergraduate Student
• Declared major or minor in Spanish
• Show an enthusiastic and responsible attitude toward working with the Hispanic Community in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties

The Study Abroad Scholarship
Sponsored by the UNCC Bookstore, the Study Abroad Scholarship, is a financial award based on scholarly merit designed to help cover the travel expenses of our language students who choose to enrich their UNCC experience through a full learning-immersion experience in a host country of their chosen target language.
